NFL referees don't favor the Chiefs, despite popular belief

After a pass interference call on 4th and 16 in Week 2 set them up for a game-winning field goal against the Cincinnati Bengals, the cries began to rain down about NFL officials having favoritism towards the Kansas City Chiefs.

Not to rain on anyone's pity parade, but that simply isn't true.

Since 2020, the Chiefs have consistently been one of the most penalized teams in the NFL. In 2020, they were third in the NFL in penalties, including sixth in offensive holding and third in defensive pass interference. In 2021, they were seventh in the league in penalties and third in defensive pass interference.

In 2022, they cleaned it up and only had 87 penalties all season - they were also violently efficient and disciplined, leading the league in EPA per play.

Last season, though, they climbed back up the ranks atop the penalty leaderboards on the offensive side of the ball. Kansas City was second in the league in offensive holding calls and offensive pass interference calls, as well as fourth in defensive pass interference penalties. And did you all forget the offsides call (which was the correct call) on Kadarius Toney that rarely ever gets called and cost the Chiefs a win over the Bills?

If you're mad that Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs consistently beat your favorite team, I get it. That's an understandable qualm. It's the same thing fans hated about the Patriots for 20 years. The claims that they get this outlandish favoritism from the officials, though, is baseless and childish.
