Discolored Yellow Strip Spotted by Early Kindle Colorsoft Buyers

The $289 Kindle allows users to read their titles, such as comics and manga, in color for the first time.

Users of Amazon's latest e-reader, the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, are going online to complain about a discolored yellow strip allegedly appearing near the bottom of their device.

According to a series of Reddit posts first spotted by The Verge, some users are even trying to get replacements and refunds for their new $289 color Kindles.

The Colorsoft debuted in most major markets on October 30, 2024. It offers e-book fans the chance to read their titles in color on a Kindle for the first time, which could be a big win for comic and graphic novel fans.

One Reddit user said the yellow tinge was: "incredibly noticeable when the device is supposed to be evenly lit and colored like a piece of paper."

In contrast, another poster said the strip only appeared on their device when they used the Kindle's edge lighting feature.

Complaints about the yellow strip also filtered in the Amazon reviews of the product, with one user calling the yellow undertone "distracting".

Amazon may already be acting on the issue. Several Reddit users claimed that Amazon's customer support said that the visual problem may be software-related and could be fixed in an update shortly.

The tech giant has yet to issue an official comment on the issue.

The Kindle brand, first launched in 2007, has been having something of a revamp this month.

Outside of the release of Colorsoft, Amazon has also released new versions of all its flagship Kindles.

These include its budget-conscious standard Kindle, its higher-end alternative the Kindle Paperwhite, and its writing-capable Kindle Scribe.

The Kindle Scribe debuted in July and brought another first for the product line to the table. The Scribe allowed users to put pen to digital paper for the first time, though some reviewers noted that it may fall short of the demands of serious digital artists.
