Dignity Health to provide free screenings during prostate cancer awareness month

REDDING, Calif. -- Dignity Health is offering free prostate screenings to men over the age of 40 on Sept. 25, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month which, according to the American Cancer Society, is one of the most common cancers in men and the second leading cancer death in American men.

The free screenings will consist of free digital rectal exams and prostate-specific antigen blood tests. Prostate cancer is most common in men over the age of 65, but men who are 40 or older are encouraged to get a screening as early detection is preferred.

"Being proactive and doing your preventative screenings is the best way to get it caught. Because it starts, you know soon, the earliest detection is the best," said Jennifer Reynolds, director of Oncology.

A clinical trial will also be available to participate in during the free screenings where, with the patient's consent, test results will be sent to Dignity Health's sponsor, Prostate Conditions Educational Council to aid in research and awareness.

"The objective of the clinical trial is to increase awareness among our community members, the gentlemen in our community, and early detection of prostate abnormalities," said Clinical Trial Coordinator Joann Medina.

According to Dignity Health early detection can prevent men from going through unwanted experiences like radiation and oral therapy.

If the screening clinic finds abnormalities Dignity Health said they will immediately refer the patient over to a provider, Redding Urological Association.

Space is limited so you can call (530) 225-7479 to register for the event.
