Steelers Injury Update: Wilson Healthy for Week 1?

The Pittsburgh Steelers received bad news during their preparation for Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons when quarterback Russell Wilson's calf flared up. Almost immediately, his status for the opener was in doubt, and the likelihood of backup Justin Fields making his Steelers debut instead of the veteran became much more likely.

For now, Wilson is taking things day-by-day, and he'll test it out on Sunday in hopes of retaining his spot atop the depth chart.

But Wilson wasn't alone on the injury report throughout the week, nor was he the only one tagged with a game day status for the opener.

On Friday, Pittsburgh released its post-injury practice report and game status designations.

The Pittsburgh faithful will have to hold their breath until Sunday for official news on their quarterback. It's worth noting that calf injuries can be stingy and detrimental to several aspects of quarterback play, including typical dropbacks, pocket navigation, and lower-body mechanics.

"I just felt a little tight (on Thursday)," Wilson told reporters on Friday. "I wanted to be smart about it. Obviously, we play the game on Sunday, I'm hoping I get to be in it. Just trying to try and get ready to go.

"I'm trying to get my body ready to go and rock and roll. So, we're doing everything we can.

The team, notably, will be without rookie receiver Roman Wilson and starting left guard Isaac Seumalo. Given the fragility of the passing offense at full strength, these injuries further destabilize what may be the Steelers' weakest unit.
