If we learned anything from last week, it's that one can never be too sure when it comes to high school football in Arkansas.
Bentonville pulled off what may be the biggest upset of the regular season when it capitalized on turnover after turnover from Fayetteville to move to the top of the 7A-West standings.
Cabot and Sheridan pushed heavy favorites to the wire, Rivercrest displayed the growing gap in the 3A-3 and Carlisle proved it was head and shoulders above its competition.
This week's slate of games is full of intriguing matchups, like the first meeting between Pulaski Academy and Conway, Bentonville's next challenge and multiple games that could decide conferences.
Here's a deeper look at those and more of this week's top games:
Predicted winner in ALL CAPS
CONWAY (7-0, 4-0 7A-Central) at Pulaski Academy (6-1, 3-1)
Pulaski Academy's move up to Class 7A has brought fans a new matchup almost every week. This week brings the Bruins together with the Conway Wampus Cats in a matchup of two of the state's top offenses, led by two top quarterbacks. Conway quarterback Grayson Wilson, a University of Arkansas commit, has excelled in a new system after transferring from Central Arkansas Christian. Pulaski Academy's Brandon Cobb leads all quarterbacks in the state with 2,474 yards. The difference in this one will come down to defense, where the Wampus Cats have the edge, and, as they are in any of the Bruins' games, onside kicks.
ROGERS (5-2, 3-1 6A-West) at Bentonville (4-3, 4-0)
Bentonville didn't have much time to celebrate its win as it had to move quickly to prepare for Rogers. The Mounties have lost 17 straight meetings with the Tigers since 2007. Most of those were blowouts, but last season's came down to one score. Rogers has the top-ranked defense in Class 7A and will look to be more careful with the ball than Fayetteville was.
BENTON (6-1, 4-0 6A-East) at Little Rock Catholic (7-0, 4-0)
While Marion will certainly have a say in the two weeks after this one, this matchup will go a long way in deciding who wins the 6A-East. These two played one of the most entertaining games last season with Benton winning 49-42. These programs each have one conference title since Little Rock Catholic moved down in 2022. The Panthers' offense has been nearly unstoppable when it's operating at full capacity, but the Rockets have proven to have one of Class 6A's top defenses.
Mountain Home (6-1, 3-1 6A-West) at LAKE HAMILTON (5-2, 3-1)
With Greenwood looking as close to a lock as anyone in state to win its conference, the shuffling for which team will get the No. 2 seed and the second bye begins this week with a matchup between a pair of the 3-1 teams in the 6A-West. Lake Hamilton has won each of the four matchups with Mountain Home since the two were moved into the same conference in 2020. Expect lots of rushing yards between Mountain Home's Jacob Chenoweth and Lake Hamilton's Hayden Barton.
Searcy (6-1, 4-0 5A-Central) at JOE T. ROBINSON (6-1, 4-0)
The move down to Class 5A has been a breath of fresh air for Searcy and Coach Zak Clark, who has already matched the season-high win total in his tenure. Joe T. Robinson's streak of six straight conference titles was snapped last season, but the Senators are looking to start a new one this season. The Senators have the third-ranked scoring defense in Class 5A, holding opponents to 13.3 points per game.
FARMINGTON (6-1, 4-0 5A-West) at Morrilton (7-0, 4-0)
Farmington completed the first half of its two-week test when it took down Vilonia last week. Now the Cardinals face the Morrilton Devil Dogs to all but wrap up the 5A-West title. If Morrilton can continue its undefeated start, a win next week over Vilonia would have a similar effect. Both of these teams are battle tested with plenty of close wins between them.
BOONEVILLE (7-0, 4-0 3A-1) at Mansfield (5-2, 4-0)
As the defending Class 3A champion, Booneville has left little room for doubt that it's the favorite to hoist that crown again this season. The Bearcats feature a bevy of players receiving carries for a team that averages nearly 40 points per game. Mansfield isn't far behind that under second-year Coach Whit Overton, a former Booneville assistant. The Tigers' last win over the Bearcats was in 1980.
RIVERCREST (7-0, 4-0 3A-3) at Osceola (5-1, 4-0)
After being shut out in his first game back in charge at Osceola, Robert Hooks has had the Seminoles rolling. Hooks returned to the program he led from 2017-2019 this past offseason and already has them surpassing last season's win total. Rivercrest, on the other hand, has looked as good as any team in Class 3A thanks to a dynamic offense, led by quarterback Cavonta Washington.
PRESCOTT (7-0, 4-0 3A-7) at Bismarck (7-0, 4-0)
No matter how much success Bismarck has had in recent years, the same team has remained an immovable road block. Prescott is 23-0 all-time against Bismarck, including five wins in the past three seasons. The Curley Wolves' pipeline of talent continues to overwhelm opponents, led by Tulsa commit Decari Prater, Dwayne White and Jayden Purtle. This will likely be the strongest Bismarck squad Prescott has faced if the program's first 7-0 start is any indication.
Murfreesboro (5-2, 4-0 2A-3) at JUNCTION CITY (5-2, 4-0)
For a minute it looked like this matchup may not be what it was built up to be in the preseason when both teams started 0-2. But since then they are a combined 8-0 in conference play and could decide the conference title Friday. Their play in the 2A-3 has been similar with blowouts surrounding one close win. This is the first meeting between these programs since 2009. Look for Junction City's Dominique Grimes (1,067 all-purpose yards) to make plays.
