"Hello, gorgeous." "Funny Girl" is the first part of a duology that tracks the life of vaudeville star, Ziegfeld Girl, and radio icon Fanny Brice (Barbra Streisand) from a girl determined to break out of the chorus to the most popular comic Ziegfeld ever promoted. Along the way, she struggles with her self esteem, is courted by charming gambler Nicky Arnstein (Omar Sharif) and copes with his spendthrift ways. Fanny must learn to see her own worth and ultimately discovers that she can't save Nicky, even though she loves him.
"Funny Girl" started life as a Broadway musical, and it's been revived there multiple times. But there's only one film version of the story, and there's only one motion picture version at press time. But the film was made all the way back in 1968, which means that not all of its main stars are still alive. But one of them most definitely is.
