Liam Souliere's shutout leads No. 4 Gophers over No. 18 Penn State

Liam Souliere made 28 saves as his shutout helped the Minnesota Golden Gophers men's hockey team defeat the Penn State Nittany Lions 1-0 at 3M Arena at Mariucci on Saturday night.

The win moves the Gophers' record to 7-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play. Penn State moves to 4-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in Big Ten play.

Souliere's performance led the Gophers, but a worthy adversary met him: Arsenii Sergeev stopped 11 shots for Penn State.

With both goalies on fire, it was the Gophers' nation-leading offense that was the difference as Jimmy Clark scored the game-winner in the final minute of regulation to give Minnesota its sixth straight win.

The goal came with just 26 seconds remaining in the game after Luke Mittelstadt fired the initial shot towards the net and Clark was charging from the left circle, with his stick out in front of him, directing the puck on target where it flew past Sergeev.

It's Souliere's first shutout since blanking Michigan Tech in the NCAA Allentown Regional on March 24, 2023 during his junior season at Penn State.

For Clark, it was his second consecutive night finding the back of the net, already posting double-digit points in just eight games this season.

"I thought it was a great, gutsy effort from both teams and I'm really proud of how we just continued to dig in," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "Both goalies were dueling it out and both looked great. The few times [Liam] was really under pressure, he never felt it, and then made some critical saves."

The Gophers will next travel to Wisconsin to begin a two-game series on Friday night. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. in Friday's opener.
