Jets believe pass rush can be elite, even without Haason Reddick: 'Y'all gonna see on Monday'

Three days before the Jets' season-opener against the 49ers there's still no sign of Haason Reddick, whose vacant stall adorned with his No. 7 and last name tells the story as his increasingly bizarre holdout continues.

The Jets have continued to make it clear that they'll welcome Reddick with open arms when and if his contract situation gets figured out, with coach Robert Saleh on Thursday still refusing to rule him out for Week 1. His would-be defensive linemates have been just as accommodating, with Quinnen Williams saying Friday he was confident that Reddick and the front office will soon be on the same page.

But with Reddick's availability for Monday becoming less likely with every passing moment, many are doubting that the Jets defensive line can replace the pass rush production it lost with John Franklin-Myers and Bryce Huff departing in the offseason.

But not the guys in the locker room who are tasked with rushing the quarterback.

"I mean, you can ask the teams we joint practiced against," edge rusher Jermaine Johnson said Friday. "And then y'all gonna see on Monday, so I think we all feel pretty good."

Johnson is unquestionably the Jets best and most proven pass rusher heading into Monday night's game, after his breakout sophomore season last year. The 2022 first-round pick had 7.5 sacks and 16 QB hits last season, more than tripling his rookie production and earning a Pro Bowl spot as a reserve.

But the rest of the edge rushers on the team have yet to prove they can consistently harass the quarterback: 2023 first-round pick Will McDonald had three sacks as a rookie and will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Johnson with breakout sophomore year, and Micheal Clemons has three sacks through his first 32 games.
