Jets Remain Unconcerned With Secondary's Increase In Penalties

The New York Jets have one of the most elite secondaries in the NFL this season, just as they have had over the last three seasons.

Since the draft selection of Sauce Gardner, and the signing of D.J. Reed, the Jets have turned one of the league's struggling defenses into one of the league's best.

One problem the group still tends to have, though, is a penchant for penalties.

In New York's 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Jet cornerbacks were called for four pass-interference penalties with three called on the All-Pro in Gardner.

While not all of those penalties seemed legit, it's something defensive backs coach Marquand Manuel has understood and is willing to work through with his current stars.

"Penalties are going to happen," Manuel explained. "The aggressive ones that we talk about all the time, the ones that we can live with, some of the things, and I think we do a really good job, and we've always done a good job of this part of being able to talk to refs and talk to players, and talk to them at the same time of when they happen and things of that nature, so we know how to adjust moving forward.

"Some of them come at critical times, but we also have to understand that we know exactly how to play the game, and just continuously staying calm and focused and poised on that."

The Jets appear unfairly penalized at times, especially with some of their elite stars across the ball. For players like Gardner, though, being able to manage their frustration after calls will be important moving forward.

Especially with defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich now pushed into the interim head coaching rankings.
