NFL insider: Philadelphia Eagles should trade $51 million free-agent bust for draft pick

According to OverTheCap.com, the Eagles have approximately $19.5 million in cap space as All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun, edge rusher Josh Sweat, defensive tackle Milton Williams, and offensive lineman Mekhi Becton approach free agency.

That cap number will likely grow when general manager Howie Roseman reworks contracts and begins releasing players.

Roseman orchestrated a coup last offseason, rebuilding a roster that collapsed at the end of 2023. The Eagles brought in Baun, Becton, Saquon Barkley, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and drafted rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Each played a pivotal role in leading the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory.

With more decisions looming, an NFL insider believes the Eagles need to trade a high-priced free agent who hasn't met expectations.

The only blemish on Roseman's 2024 offseason was signing defensive end Bryce Huff to a three-year, $51.1 million contract. Huff recorded just 2.5 sacks and five solo tackles in 12 games and was inactive for the Super Bowl.

ESPN's Aaron Schatz believes the Eagles should trade Huff and attempt to recoup a mid-round pick in the upcoming draft.

"The Eagles aren't going to have any use for Huff going forward, but someone will despite his off year. So why not trade him instead of cutting him? Let's find the other teams that were interested in Huff a season ago and the Eagles can try to flip him for draft picks," said Schatz.

One team that could potentially be interested in Huff is the Atlanta Falcons.

"Atlanta would be an interesting team to start with -- the Falcons desperately need pass-rush help and took a look at Huff last year. The Eagles will need to make the trade with a post-June 1 designation because it will give Philadelphia an additional $4.3 million in cap space and $3.3 million in dead money. That's worth it if the Eagles can get a midround 2026 pick as well," added Schatz.

Huff had the best season of his career with the New York Jets in 2023, recording 10 sacks and 21 quarterback hits. However, with the Eagles, he was never able to find his footing.

According to Spotrac, Huff has a 2025 option bonus of $15.58 million in guaranteed money that must be exercised at the start of the regular season.
