What is listeria?
Listeria is a bacteria that can contaminate many foods, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Listeria can cause an intestinal illness with symptoms that include vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms typically begin within 24 hours of eating contaminated food and last for one to three days. Symptoms are usually mild, according to the CDC.
If listeria spreads beyond the gut, it can cause a fever and flu-like symptoms such as muscle aches and fatigue.
Listeria can cause serious or sometimes fatal infections for pregnant people, newborns, those over age 65, or those with weakened immune systems.
