Mike Vrabel is a lot less busy in 2024 than he was at this time last year. The former NFL head coach spent his Sunday sitting courtside at an Ohio State volleyball match instead of on the sideline.
However, he did not even try to hide the fact that he was watching football on his phone.
Vrabel, a consensus All-American at linebacker for the Buckeyes in the the mid-to-late 1990s, was inducted into his alma mater's Hall of Fame as a three-time First-Team All-Big Ten player and a two-time Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year. His highlight tape does not get as much love as it deserves.
The former Ohio State star went on to play 14 years in the NFL and won three Super Bowls before retiring in 2010 to become a coach. He most recently served as head coach of the Titans from 2018 through last season. Tennessee cut him loose even though the organization has much bigger issues.
Mike Vrabel ultimately joined Cleveland's coaching staff as a consultant, but he does not work full-time with the team and does not travel. The Browns were on the road at Philadelphia on Sunday.
While they lost yet another game in demoralizing fashion, Vrabel stopped by Columbus to watch the Buckeyes' first-ever women's volleyball match in the Scottenstein Center -- which typically houses the basketball team. A record-breaking crowd of 8,844 saw Ohio State lose to Michigan in four sets.
Even though Vrabel was sitting courtside for the match, he was also streaming football on his iPhone -- probably. If the way his hand held the cellular device out in front of his body at his knee was not a dead giveaway, the singular headphone in his left ear was pretty obvious.
