Howl's Moving Castle Returns to Theaters for 20th Anniversary

Studio Ghibli showed off the first poster for the 20th anniversary of Howl's Moving Castle. A re-release of the film will appear in theaters from September 26, 2024. [Thanks, DiscussingFilm!]

The poster shows Howl and Sophie standing with their backs to each other. Howl has black hair, so it seems like the poster expects you to have seen the movie already. In the background, we can see supporting characters like Markl and Turnip-Head.

Howl's Moving Castle came out in 2004 and loosely takes inspiration from Diana Wynne Jones's 1986 novel of the same name. It follows Sophie, a girl working in a hat shop. After a witch turns Sophie into a 90-year-old woman, she makes her way to Howl's moving castle to find a cure for her curse. The movie has strong anti-war sentiments and themes, as Miyazaki drew influence from the rage he felt about the Iraq war. It was one of the most commercially successful Japanese films in history, as it made over $190 million in Japan and $236 million worldwide.

The 20th anniversary showing of Howl's Moving Castle will appear in select theaters from September 26 to October 3, 2024. You'll need to check your local theaters to see if it's available there. For those who want to watch other Studio Ghibli films, Netflix will be getting The Boy and the Heron and Grave of the Fireflies.
