'Coach Pete' steps away as coach at Millard West

After 22 seasons, a Class A state title and two other appearances in the final, Kirk Peterson will not be Millard West's football coach in 2025.

Peterson declined comment in a text on Friday.

According to a statement from the school: "After three decades of coaching football and 22 seasons as the head coach, coach Kirk Peterson -- fondly known as 'Coach Pete' -- will be stepping away from his role as head football coach next season.

"Since Millard West opened its doors in 1995, Coach Pete has been a constant presence on the sidelines, shaping countless student-athletes as both an assistant and head coach. His dedication, leadership and passion for the game have left a lasting impact on our program and community.

"On behalf of Millard West, we thank Coach Pete for his years of service and commitment. His legacy will always be a part of Wildcat history."

Peterson was promoted from defensive coordinator to coach after Dan McLaughlin was hired at Wayne State in 2003.

The Wildcats were state champions in 2008, beating Millard South 21-8, then lost the rematch in the 2009 final 45-17.

They last were in Memorial Stadium in 2015, losing 21-14 to Millard North. Millard West was in the playoffs 20 times under Peterson, making it past the opening round 16 times.

The Wildcats' most illustrious alum during Peterson's tenure is Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Harrison Phillips.
