A Texas Favorite Burger Is the No. 2 Unhealthiest in the Nation

HOUSTON, Texas (KPEL News) - One of the most popular burger chains in Texas has made the list of the unhealthiest burgers in America.

The old adage is that everything is bigger in Texas, and that holds true for its burgers, apparently - at least when it comes to its sodium and fat content.

Whataburger's immense popularity in Texas goes beyond just being a fast-food chain -- it's a cultural institution. Founded in Corpus Christi in 1950, Whataburger has become a symbol of Texas pride, with a fiercely loyal fan base that spans generations.

Many Texans have grown up with Whataburger, and its deep roots in the state make it more than just a place to grab a burger; it's a part of everyday life.

One of the main reasons Whataburger stands out is its made-to-order approach. Unlike many fast-food chains, Whataburger offers large, customizable burgers, allowing customers to tailor their meals exactly to their tastes. The classic "Whataburger," with its sizable 5-inch bun and fresh ingredients, has become a staple for Texans seeking a satisfying meal.

Iconic menu items like the Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit and the Patty Melt have developed cult followings of their own.

Whataburger's 24/7 service also adds to its appeal, making it a favorite late-night spot for Texans across the state. Combined with its reputation for friendly, welcoming service, the chain has built a strong emotional connection with customers.

Ultimately, Whataburger is more than just food in Texas -- it's a shared experience and a point of local pride, helping solidify its status as a Lone Star State favorite.

According to a study by PlushCare, the Jalapeno & Cheese Whataburger is tied at No. 2 for the unhealthiest fast food burger in America. It's tied with the Classic Smash from Smash Burger, and just behind the iconic Cheeseburger from Five Guys.

Here's the full list from PlushCare.

"Many Americans believe that burgers are healthy -- and it's true that slow-cooked lean ground beef on a healthy bun can provide protein, iron, and vitamin B12," PlushCare said. "But the World Health Organization (WHO) has found red meat and ultra-processed foods to be carcinogenic, which is basically what you're getting with a fast-food cheeseburger."

According to our calculations, the Five Guys cheeseburger is the most unhealthy in its class, primarily because it has 73% more saturated fat than any other fast-food cheeseburger," the study said.
