ESPN experts give their take on Nets' Cam Thomas pending extension

The Brooklyn Nets have decided to fully embrace their current rebuild after trading Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks earlier this summer in exchange for a bevy of first-round draft picks. One of the storylines that should follow Brooklyn this season is what contract extension talks will be like for guard Cam Thomas.

Given the fact that Bridges is no longer on the Nets' roster, that places the offense squarely in the hands of Thomas, a player who has made his name on being one of the better scorers in the NBA. However, this season will also serve as his chance to earn himself as much money as possible when he is a restricted free-agent next summer, but that scenario can play out a multitude of ways.

"I think he (Thomas) might lead the league in scoring. I think he's gonna lead at least in shot attempts. So, with Brooklyn, what do you do," ESPN's Bobby Marks said on the most recent episode of "The Lowe Post" podcast. Marks and Zach Lowe took part of the episode to discuss various players that are up for extensions to their rookie contract and Thomas was picked as one of the interesting ones given Brooklyn's rebuild.

"Do you do something that makes sense now," Marks began. "What does make sense mean? Is it in the low 20s (millions)? Is that too rich for a guy that could average 28, 30 points a game? He's a restricted free agent next year, he's got such a low cap hold, you've got all this room and stuff like that."

Plenty of people around the NBA have been wondering when Thomas is going to get extended and for how much given what some of the rookie extensions have been. However, with training camp just a few weeks away, it seems that Thomas may have to until after this season is over to finally cash in on his performances and the figure could be determined by how well he plays this year.
