The Kansas City Chiefs' Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens took a turn in the fourth quarter when Roquan Smith laid a late hit on Patrick Mahomes after a run to the sideline.

Mahomes clearly went out of bounds to gain a first down on the play, and Smith made contact with the reigning Super Bowl MVP well after he passed the sideline.

Referees failed to call a penalty on Smith, and the crowd at Arrowhead Stadium let out a roar when they saw the replay of the illegal hit on the jumbotron.

Nobody is perfect, but this hit was egregious, and it was surprising to see the referees swallow their whistles.
