'If he wasn't on the street my son would be alive': Hermitage mom says her teen son's death could have been prevented

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A Hermitage mom has an important message for other teen parents after her 16-year-old son was shot outside their home over the weekend. Zeppelin Phillips is now dead and it's all because of a gun sale.

Zeppelin was a boy who had a love for fishing, and a passion for music. He was always around his family and his mom, Kendelle Phillips.

"Good kid, went to school, went to a private school, worked at Wendy's," she said.

"Every one of his friends considered him to be their best friend and I've never met anybody like that," said Katie Newbold, Zeppelin Phillips' aunt.

On Saturday night, Kendelle drove back from her other son's birthday party and when she turned the corner to her house, she saw a scene outside her home no mom should ever witness.

"I screamed a scream only a mother who is watching their son die would scream," she said.

Kendelle said Zeppelin was lying in the road with three gunshot wounds as neighbors were doing CPR. Witnesses told Metro Nashville Police a car pulled up, fired a gun, and drove off.

"I told the guy doing compressions, 'harder, harder, break his ribs,'" she said. "[Zeppelin] heard my voice and he really tried to stay with us, and I was able to say, 'I love you, I love you.'"

It wasn't until Kendelle was inside the ambulance on the way to Vanderbilt University Medical Center she started to figure out what led up to her son's death.

According to Kendelle, a minute before he was shot, he sent $450 to Rapheal Jobehdari.

Kendelle said Zeppelin reached out to Jobehdari to buy a gun. She doesn't know why he wanted one and she said she does not believe the two were friends.

Metro Police said Jobehdari was arrested earlier this year for a deadly shooting outside a Bellevue strip mall, but he claimed self-defense and was released.

"I want to know why he was let go," said Kendelle. "If he wasn't on the street my son would be alive."

"Whatever Zeppelin needed protection from, I think in his brain he was like, 'This guy is willing to sell me a gun at a price I can afford with my Wendy's minimum wage,'" Kendelle said.

Kendelle said her son was a big communicator, but she still wants other parents to be aware.

"Don't be afraid to pursue, keep pursuing, make sure that they are doing ok," she said.

MNPD said Jobehdari was arrested on Sunday morning and they took three guns during their search.
