It was a subtle reminder.

Jefferson City boys soccer coach Scott Blake casually strolled down the sideline toward the midfield line with a little less than seven minutes remaining in the first overtime period in Monday night's game against Helias at the Crusader Athletic Complex.

After a foul, the Jays were set up for a free kick from about 45 yards out from the Crusader goal and Blake quietly, but somewhat forcefully, told Caden Goodson to put it on frame.

"You have to do that and Caden is an extremely good ball-striker," Blake said.

Sometimes long shots pay off.

Goodson's shot from distance dropped past the hands of a leaping Helias goalkeeper as the Jays posted a 1-0 victory in Central Missouri Activities Conference action.

"He has to strike it well, we have to have guys in the box to occupy defenders, we had to get the foul call," Blake said. "A lot of things go into a play like that."

Helias coach Chuck Register just had a feeling.

"Right before (Goodson) kicked it, I thought how much I hate free kicks at this time of games," Register said. "And when it was sailing, I could just tell it was going in."

Helias finished with a double-digit edge against Jefferson City in total shots through the 80 minutes of regulation.

But the scoreboard still showed zeros for both teams as they prepared to start overtime.

"We just couldn't find that one shot we could put in the back of the net," Register said. "We can be in control for a lot of the game and then one thing happens and you lose.

"And that's what happened."

Helias had seven shots in both the first and second halves. But the attacks were often slowed by the Jefferson City defense.

"I think we made them go to Plan B often," Blake said.

"We had most of the attacks tonight, we just couldn't find that one shot we could put in the back of the net," Register said.

Goodson's goal came on Jefferson City's fifth shot.

"We didn't have a lot of shots tonight, I don't know that we truly tested the keeper," Blake said. "No better way to test him than in overtime with a long shot like that. There's always a hope."

The Jays and Crusaders are both assigned to the Class 3 District 5 Tournament, which will be played next month at Jefferson City High School.

"We might end up playing them again, you never know," Register said.

Jefferson City (4-9-2 overall, 1-5 CMAC) is back in action Thursday in a conference contest at Camdenton.

"This is a good win to get," Blake said.

Helias (9-7-1, 3-3) will host Rolla on Wednesday night.

In Monday's JV game limited to one half, Helias defeated Jefferson City 1-0. Mason Sipi tallied the goal for the Crusaders.
