'Not Ready To Die': Amy Grant Provides Health Update After Suffering Two Major Health Scares

Singer Amy Grant admitted she was forced to face her mortality after suffering two major medical scares in four years.

The 63-year-old Grammy winner struggled after undergoing open-heart surgery in 2020 and sustaining a serious brain injury in 2022, she said in an interview with People published Monday. She said the incidents "changed the way" she looks at life, as she recalled the crises.

"To realize something can happen that you never see coming, and it could be over ... everything became more precious," Grant said.

Grant discovered her heart problems after a doctor, who was treating her husband, suggested she get tested to make sure her health was in order. The tests revealed she had a rare heart defect called partial anomalous pulmonary venous return (PAPVR), which means her lungs' blood vessels were attached to the wrong part of the heart. The condition forces the heart to work harder, which could lead to lung infections, swelling of the heart chambers or other serious cardiac issues, according to the outlet.

She described it as "a ticking time bomb in my chest," in a PSA she released in collaboration with the American Heart Association.

The singer said she was aware that her heart rate would get high if she exercised but assumed she just needed better stamina.

"I just learned to push through because that's what women do," Grant told the outlet.

"I was one of those women who's like, 'I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm the Energizer Bunny,' and then I just would've died," she said. "And I'm not ready to die."

Grant said she began living a healthier, more active lifestyle to keep her heart healthy after surgery, but things took a turn for the worse after a 2022 bike ride in Nashville. She hit a pothole and, despite wearing a helmet, sustained a serious brain injury that left her with memory issues for several months, the outlet reported.

"I would just say, 'What if I'm never all the way back?' Because my processing was so slow," Grant said as she described the experience.

Her memory has since improved, but it has been a long road for the star.

"I now I feel fully in control of all my capacity," she told the outlet.

Grant's perspective on life has shifted since her medical setbacks.

"I'm finding a different balance between music and family and just trying to be a lot more involved, as my adult children will allow it," she said.

"This has made us all look at each other with a kind of appreciation," she said. (RELATED: Bhad Bhabie Shocks Fans By Appearing To Share Health Update)

"I think being together maybe was a little bit on autopilot, and it doesn't feel that way now."
