Ordo Sonic+ electric toothbrush review

Why you can trust Live Science Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best ones for you. Find out more about how we test.

Ordo promises high-quality, affordable oral care that's simple, effective and eco-friendly -- and this is a mission statement that we can stand by. However, striking a good balance between price and quality is easier said than done. This is why we were keen to see whether its flagship product, the Ordo Sonic+ electric toothbrush, lives up to the promises.

Priced from $50 to $80 (depending on the retailer), the Ordo Sonic+ has all it takes to be one of the best electric toothbrushes on a budget. It offers four brushing modes (including gum massage) and four weeks of battery life. Since it is a sonic toothbrush, it cleans with up to an impressive 40,000 vibrations per minute. The Ordo Sonic+ also features a two-minute timer and a quad pacer to signal when to move the toothbrush to a different part of the mouth during brushing. Not to mention, this toothbrush comes in six fabulous colors.

The first thing we noticed about the Ordo Sonic+ is the sheer size and weight of the toothbrush handle. It measures more than 11 inches (28 centimeters) and weighs over 1.2 pounds (0.5 kilograms). This makes the toothbrush feel quite bulky and tricky to maneuver. We got used to operating the Ordo Sonic+ eventually, but we suspect that people with small hands or poor dexterity may struggle here.

That does not take away from the fact that it is a great-looking toothbrush. We picked a lovely rose gold color for our testing unit -- but not without lengthy consideration beforehand. All six available colors, from classic white to minty green and violet, look simply beautiful. Ordo has defied the industry standard of bland block colors and opted instead for gentle, opalescent hues that change tone under sunlight. This makes the toothbrush feel somewhat premium, even though it is largely made of plastic.

We also found the design to be very user-friendly. The Ordo Sonic+ has no hard-to-reach crevices or protruding buttons, so it was easy to clean. At the same time, all that smoothness did not make it slippery when wet. The toothbrush did not require any complex assembly, either -- just pop in the brush head and you are ready to go.

On the downside, the Ordo Sonic+ comes with just one brush head, leaving no choice for people with sensitive teeth or complex dental needs. It also does not include any spare brush heads in the package. But ultimately, this utilitarian approach is what keeps it affordable, with a four-pack of replacement brush heads costing just $24.99.

The Ordo Sonic+ features four brushing modes, all of which operate at one intensity: there's a Clean mode for general daily brushing, the more intense White mode for teeth polishing, the less intense Sensitive mode, and finally a Massage mode that's designed to clean around the gum line and stimulate the gums with gentle pulses. The toothbrush is also equipped with a two-minute timer and a quad pacer that pulses every 30s during brushing to prompt you to move to a different quarter of your mouth.

That is pretty much it. The Ordo Sonic+ does not offer a pressure sensor or any other feature that would give you brushing feedback. It comes with no high-tech frills or connected apps, and does not include a travel case or other accessories, either. So if you are looking for a toothbrush that can help you improve your brushing routine, you may need to look elsewhere.

The Ordo Sonic+ does certain things exceptionally well. For starters, its battery life is impressive. According to the manufacturer, this electric toothbrush can last up to four weeks on a single charge. However, our toothbrush was still going strong after EIGHT weeks of intense daily use. It is not common to see such a trooper.

The Ordo Sonic+ is also easy on the ears. It makes a gentle buzzing hum rather than the sharp whirring noises typical of oscillating toothbrushes. When we measured it with a Sound Meter decibel-counting app, we noted approximately 50 dB -- the equivalent of quiet conversation or refrigerator noises.

More importantly, the Ordo Sonic+ offers a thorough clean that is gentle enough to suit people with sensitive teeth. The bristles feel soft and pleasant to brush with, while the Massage mode helps to clean around the gum line without aggravating the soft tissues in the mouth. Even the White mode felt somewhat light-handed when compared to other toothbrushes we tested before.

However, this also means that the Ordo Sonic+ may feel too weak for those who prefer a powerful polishing action. We also noticed that the bristles started fraying and losing shape after several weeks of use.

The Ordo Sonic+ is rated 4.2 out of 5 stars on Amazon. Positive reviews praised this toothbrush for its exceptional battery life and good brushing efficiency, with many buyers noting that its brush head is small enough to suit users with braces and other dental work.

As one user commented: "It's a game-changer. After five months of daily use, the battery indicator still looked as fresh as the first day I charged it. It's like the toothbrush version of a camel in the desert -- it keeps going. [...] The Ordo Sonic electric toothbrush doesn't just brush your teeth; it feels like it polishes them. It's almost like walking out of a dental cleaning session every morning and night, minus the awkward small talk with your dentist."

Negative reviews, on the other hand, tended to mention defects in individual units, and some users complained about the plastic build and non-oscillating brush head of the Ordo Sonic+. As one user said, "With this and any other toothbrush that doesn't rotate it is hard to reach the last tooth."

✅ Buy it if: You are looking for a reasonably priced toothbrush for sensitive teeth. With its soft bristles, powerful sonic technology and four brushing modes, the Ordo Sonic+ delivers a thorough clean without aggravating the gums. It is also one of the best toothbrushes for battery life, and it looks fabulous, too.

❌ Don't buy it if: You need a smart-enabled toothbrush that can give you detailed feedback on brushing technique, or if you are looking for ultra-powerful polishing and whitening modes.

If you are looking for something more budget-friendly than the Ordo Sonic+, check out the Bitvae R2. This oscillating toothbrush comes with a whopping seven spare brush heads, a handy travel case, five cleaning modes and a pressure sensor -- and it costs just $34.99.

For those with sensitive teeth and gums, the Oclean X Pro Digital Sonic is another good alternative. This smart-enabled sonic toothbrush is equipped with a patented Maglev 2.0 motor that provides an exceptionally gentle and thorough clean, and its brushing settings can be personalized to suit your needs. However, it costs $159.99, or $129.99 without the case and spare brush heads.

If you are looking for endless personalization features, take a look at the Laifen Wave. This innovative toothbrush comes with three different brush heads and an app that will help you set your preferred brushing intensity. It is also relatively affordable, with prices ranging from $69.99 to $79.99 depending on the chosen design.

We spent nearly two months testing the Ordo Sonic+ electric toothbrush, assessing its design, brushing efficiency, ease of use, battery life, and value for money. We also measured how loud it is with a Sound Meter decibel counting app, and tested its water resistance by submerging it underwater for the duration of a 2-minute brushing cycle.
