UC Santa Cruz ended Christopher Newport's NCAA Division III all-time record unbeaten streak Sunday at 84 games, defeating the second-ranked Captains 2-0 on the Banana Slugs' field in California.

It was CNU's first loss, other than in penalty kicks, since 2019, and the first ever in the head-coaching career of Jamie Gunderson (75-1-9).

Kristi Truong scored in the 17th minute and Camille Anneet in the 30th. CNU outshot the unranked Banana Slugs 16-8, but UCSC's Ainsley Gove made 10 saves. CNU's Amy Sidaway had two.

It was Santa Cruz's first C2C title in a sport other than cross country. The Captains (15-1-2) and Banana Slugs (10-2-5) will learn their NCAA pairings at 2 p.m. Monday on NCAA.com.

ODU, seeded seventh, finished 7-8-2. Marshall improved to 10-1-6 and will play host to James Madison or Central Florida in a semifinal.

Noah Madrigal's goal in the 35th minute put ODU ahead. But in a 12-minute, 15-second span, the Herd went ahead 3-1 on a penalty kick by Pablo Simon and goals by Joao Roberto and Rai Pinto.

Evan Watt scored for ODU with 2:45 left, but Marshall hung on.

Mary Washington (17-1-2), the top-ranked team in Division III, won a 3-2 thriller over Christopher Newport in Fredericksburg for the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference tourney title. That ended the Captains' season at 6-7-5.

CNU's Drew McWhinney scored the game's first goal in the 27th minute and forced OT by scoring in the 89th, with just 1:48 left in regulation, to erase a 2-1 Eagles edge.

Carter Berg, who put Mary Washington on the board in the 28th minute, kicked in a loose ball in the box 2:40 into overtime. The play started with a UMW corner kick. The Eagles and many other teams will learn their national pairings at 1:30 p.m. Monday on NCAA.com.
