Champaign City Council study session discusses several downtown projects

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) -Several changes could be coming to Downtown Champaign.

The Champaign City Council held a study session Tuesday night to talk about three projects.

One of those involves improvements to Park Avenue by the Virginia Theater. The plan is to build have new sidewalks, add more outdoor seating, and get speed tables in the road designed to slow down the traffic.

Also on the agenda is the Neil Street Plaza creating more of an entertainment and bigger space for the community.

Finally, officials discussed the Neil Street corridor beautification plan. That will improve area benches, trashcans, bicycle racks and more.

"That's really important because again, we need to get things moving and get people interested in coming back to downtown, know, make sure we're able to rebuild our downtown from an economic development standpoint." said Lacey Rains Lowe, a planning manager.

These projects altogether is estimated to cost nearly $24 million.
