Newburgh Football Season Canceled After Alleged Violations
The Newburgh Free Academy (NFA) Goldbacks varsity football team's season has been unexpectedly cut short following a serious violation of the school's Student Code of Conduct. Dr. J. Manning Campbell, Superintendent of Newburgh Schools, announced Tuesday evening that the remainder of the football season has been canceled due to the ongoing investigation into the allegations.
While the district has not released full details of the violation, sources indicate that the issue involves a hazing-related incident among team members. As a result, NFA's upcoming Class AA semifinal game against Middletown, scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m., has been forfeited. Middletown, the defending Class AA champion, will advance to the championship game next week.
Superintendent Campbell confirmed that the district has engaged law enforcement to assist in the investigation. In a letter to parents, Campbell explained that the investigation is still ongoing, and the district is committed to supporting those affected. "Based upon our findings to date, we have formally engaged law enforcement and will support their investigation as necessary," Campbell said. "Unfortunately, due to the circumstances, the remainder of the football season has been canceled."
The cancellation follows several previous actions, including the suspension of NFA's non-league game against Our Lady of Lourdes Poughkeepsie and the removal of certain athletes from the Oct. 25 Class AA game against Kingston. As the investigation continues, Campbell expressed growing confidence in identifying those involved and understanding the full timeline of events.
"I recognize that some of our students and families may feel frustrated and believe they are being unfairly penalized for the actions of a few," Campbell wrote. "I want to reaffirm that the safety and well-being of all of our scholars remain my top priority."
