Larry McReynolds is America's Crew Chief for a reason. He earned that title with his years of success. As a result, he's respected in the garage. His voice matters.
The two-time Daytona 500-winning crew chief shared that voice Tuesday on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio when talking about the young up-and-coming drivers in NASCAR. At one point, the conversation shifted to drivers paying for their rides and McReynolds didn't hesitate to share his feelings on the situation.
"If I took my notebook piece of paper here and I drew a line down the middle and on the left side, I put drivers that brought money, and then on the right side I put drivers that brought money that had talent," McReynolds said. "If we just look at the last 10 years, I could probably fill both columns up. Because there is drivers - there's a lot of them that bring money. They bring a sponsor. They bring family money.
"But, to your point about William Sawalich, he brings talent. We've already seen it. But we know there's a long list of kids that's drug a check through the door of an operation. It's like, what in the world is going on here? This is just not very good."
Larry Mac's viewpoint is shared by most fans because they recognize the business model in NASCAR is unlike any other. In the NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, or any other sport, the athletes who compete at the highest levels get there on merit, not money.
Unfortunately, this system has been in place since the very beginning and it's unlikely to change anytime soon.
