Breast cancer survivors unite for East Chicago's Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

CHICAGO - Drue Frazier, an elegantly dressed and loved matriarch, celebrated her 90th birthday in September.

"They gave me a birthday party on the 21st, and I ain't come down yet," Frazier said.

Over the years, Frazier has seen a lot, including several health scares.

"A lot of people that had cancer, they're gone and I'm still here and I thank God for that," she said.

On Saturday morning, Frazier participated in the fifth annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk at Sunny Side Park in East Chicago. She was previously diagnosed with breast cancer once in 1986, a second time n 2008, and lung cancer in 2010.

"My biggest promotion and my inspiration is Mrs. Drue Frazier, 90 years young," said 4th District Councilwoman of East Chicago Stacy Winfield.

Winfield started the annual walk to show local cancer survives that she cares.

"It was important to me to reach out and be able to say, 'Hey, I care and the way that I can show I care is I want to do a walk on your behalf,'" Winfield said.

Winfield hopes taking a lap for love with Frazier shows other survivors, those fighting the disease, and the many who have lost a loved one to breast cancer that they're not alone.

"If you can't be inspired, you can after you hear [Frazier's] story," Winfield said.

Frazier, after all she's been through, doesn't take anything for granted.

"God's grace is all I can say," she said. "I just thank God I'm able to be there and I thank God for waking me up."

More than 50 breast cancer survivors joined forces Saturday in East Chicago, Indiana to support each other and encourage those with the disease.
