DOJ investigates officer-involved fatal shooting in town of Lafayette

After 25 years Bill and Mary Brunstad will hand over the Chippewa Falls Active Duty Military Display to the YMCA.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting death in the town of Lafayette in Chippewa County.

The incident started when deputies responded to a domestic abuse report at 11:31 p.m. Saturday and attempted to stop a vehicle driven by the fleeing subject.

While fleeing law enforcement, the subject crashed their vehicle near the intersection of Highway K and 50th Avenue in the town of Lafayette, according to a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

"Following the crash, the subject fired a weapon at law enforcement, striking at least one squad car from the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office," the release says. "The Eau Claire Regional SWAT Team was called in to assist and upon their arrival, the subject continued firing at law enforcement, striking an armored vehicle."

Two Regional SWAT Team members returned fire, striking the subject. EMS was contacted and law enforcement attempted life saving measures, however the subject was pronounced deceased on scene, the release says.

Involved law enforcement officers are on administrative leave, per agencies' policies.

Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes declined to comment on the incident when reached Sunday by the Chippewa Herald.

Hakes put out an alert Sunday morning about a road closure on 50th Avenue at County Road K due to an incident.

DCI is leading the investigation supported by a DCI crime response specialist, Wisconsin State Patrol and the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office.

"All involved law enforcement are fully cooperating with DCI during this investigation," the release says.

DCI will turn over the investigative reports to the Chippewa County District Attorney's office when the investigation concludes.
