Rocky River City Schools superintendent search update: Short Takes on the Westshore

The Rocky River City Schools Board of Education began the first step in its search for a new superintendent this month.

Current Superintendent Dr. Michael G. Shoaf announced to the Board of Education in March that he plans to retire on Dec. 31, 2025. Shoaf has been the superintendent since 2007.

The board has retained the services of Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA), a consulting firm based in Illinois that specializes in assisting school boards in identifying and recruiting executive-level educational leaders.

A series of focus groups for parents, community members and other stakeholder groups recently took place over the course of the past two weeks.

An online survey was also available for stakeholder feedback to assist the board in developing a profile and selection criterion that match the priorities of the community and that meet the needs of the students in the district.

"The community engagement phase is ongoing, and is being facilitated by our consultants," said Jessica Wilson, president of the Rocky River City Schools Board of Education, in an email. "The consultants will present a report of the findings in a Leadership Profile to the board at our meeting on November 4. The next step is for this Leadership Profile to be posted with the current job posting. We expect the application period to close in early January, and hope to name a superintendent in March."
