Palm Beach County reports first of locally-acquired dengue fever

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) -- The Florida Department of Health (DOH) in Palm Beach County has announced a confirmed case of locally-acquired dengue fever in the area.

In response, DOH is working with the Mosquito Control Division to monitor and treat the affected region to prevent further cases.

Palm Beach County residents are being urged by officials to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, as these insects are known carriers of various diseases.

The DOH stated that simple measures, such as using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water around homes, can help reduce the risk of mosquito bites.

In addition to dengue fever, the Department stated that they are actively monitoring for other mosquito-borne illnesses across the state, including West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, malaria, and chikungunya.

The DOH urges residents to report any dead birds to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, as this can aid in the surveillance of these diseases.
