QUINCY (WGEM) - The Quincy Fire Department urges Quincy residents to use portable generators safely, as they can catch on fire and cause harm to others.

On Sunday morning, firefighters were dispatched to 529 N 3rd St. for a report of a structure fire. When QFD crews arrived, they found fire on the exterior of the home. The fire was safely extinguished, with fans used to clear the smoke afterward.

Upon investigation, officials found that the fire started due to the homeowner using a generator too close to the house.

QFD issued the homeowner a notice of violation for not having a working smoke alarm in his home.
