Atlantic County detectives complete autism response training

MAYS LANDING, N.J. -- Detectives from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office have completed specialized training on how to interact with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Prosecutor William Reynolds announced Monday. The training, aimed at improving law enforcement responses, was led by Alex Mann, a nationally recognized autism advocate and expert.

Held at the Prosecutor's Office, the training focused on recognizing signs of autism and utilizing approaches that reduce stress and anxiety during interactions. Mann, who is on the autism spectrum himself, provided personal insights into the challenges individuals with ASD may encounter in law enforcement situations. The session also included techniques for effective communication, particularly with those who are nonverbal or have difficulty understanding social cues.

"Understanding and responding to the unique needs of individuals with autism is an essential part of our mission to serve and protect all members of the community," Reynolds said.

Prosecutor Reynolds highlighted the training as part of broader efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in policing. The program emphasized the importance of empathy and professionalism in handling interactions with the autism community.

Mann's training covered various topics, including de-escalation strategies and addressing sensory sensitivities that may be common among individuals with autism.
