Go back in time to the 1980s at this Prince-themed speakeasy on the North Shore

"You don't have to be rich" to spend some time at a Prince-themed speakeasy on the North Shore.

When Doves Cry in Beverly is "a place where everyone is welcome, as long as they're ready to have a great time and appreciate some amazing tunes," according to owner Henry Pariseau.

Pariseau told MassLive he wanted to create a space that resonated with Prince fans, like himself, so he opened When Doves Cry earlier this year.

The speakeasy is all about that nostalgic, old-school energy synonymous with the 1980s, and it shows from the disco ball-covered ceiling to jukebox near the front entrance.

When Doves Cry is covered in decor that pays homage to Prince, including a mural, shrine and even a massive purple chair with a neon sign above it bearing the speakeasy's name.

Customers can grab a drink at the bar while watching scenes from classic '80s movies on the TVs or challenge each other in a game of pinball or Pac-Man.

"I wanted to create a space that resonates with Generation X, where people can relax and enjoy the music and vibe we grew up with," Pariseau told MassLive. "It's a place where everyone is welcome, as long as they're ready to have a great time and appreciate some amazing tunes."

The drink menu features cocktails named after Prince songs, such as "U Got The Look" and "Purple Rain." The bar also serves a variety of beer, seltzers, wine, mocktails and snacks that will occasionally change.

When Doves Cry is located at 35 Cabot St. in Beverly in the same space where Cash Point used to be.

The speakeasy is open Wednesday to Saturday from 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. and Sunday from 12-9 p.m.
