Thousands of people helped as city's safe space celebrates first year

THE 'incredible' impact of a safe space in the city centre has been laid bare after thousands of people were helped within its first year.

Worcester Safe Space, which celebrated its one year anniversary this month, was set up by various sectors to support the community during events and the evening's nightlife.

Within its first year, it responded to 2,629 medical and welfare enquiries and attended 472 incidents in Worcester alone.

A spokesperson for Worcester Safe Space said: "As we reach the first anniversary of Safe Space and approach 12 months of data collection, let's reflect on the incredible impact this initiative has had in Worcester City Centre.

"Through dedicated provisions and operational support, Safe Space has become a vital resource for the community.

"Whether you're a student, a visitor, a resident, or someone experiencing rough sleeping, Safe Space is here to support you.

"We look forward to continuing our services for the community as we enter our second year of operation in 2025."

This year, Safe Space has also managed to save the NHS a minimum of £70,623.00 in ambulance conveyance and eliminated the need for 137 ambulances.

This averaged 12 ambulances saved per month over the past 11.5 months.

Worcester Safe Space was launched on December 15, 2023, by Worcester Business Improvement District (BID), with support from West Mercia Police, West Mercia's Police & Crime Commissioner John Campion, The University of Worcester, Worcester Street Pastors, and other key organisations.
