Man killed on wedding day at Barber Park in Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro police are still searching for the person who shot and killed a man on his wedding day.

Police said the shooting happened Saturday night in the parking lot of Barber Park Events Center. It's where 37-year-old Tyrek Burton had just gotten married to his wife Kiara.

The newlyweds who dated for 16 years weren't even able to leave their wedding venue before the unimaginable happened.

The groom was gunned down seven hours after saying 'I do.'

Burton's sister Brittany Burton said Tyrek's passing not only left his wife a widow but also the four daughters, two of which they took in without a father.

"Tyrek was a gentleman. A hard worker. He worked 12-hour shifts. He was a husband. A loving father. A son, a brother an uncle. An amazing dad," Burton said. "He didn't deserve this."

Police said the shooting may be related to a road rage incident, and detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led up to the shooting.

"My brother didn't know this man at all they never met. This was a random stranger. On his wedding day. It's supposed to be one of the happiest moments of his life and it turned into something tragic," Burton said. "Worldwide he did this in front of a minor, his wife with her gown on, and his best groomsman and a sister-in-law."

Burton said as they were wrapping up the reception Tyrek left Barber Park briefly.

As he was heading back, a stranger followed him saying Tyrek cut him off at the stop sign, so he shot him.

"He emptied his clip. Didn't fire one, or two shots. He didn't fire eight shots. It was in the teens," Burton said. "He literally had a hole in his chest over road rage."

GPD said lifesaving efforts were immediately initiated at the scene. However, Burton later died from his injuries.

The family was traumatized and devastated by the turn of events.

"For the person who did this, I can't even call you a person you're a monster man," Burton said. "God is going to deal with you. God will deal with you wherever you're at.

Tyrek's mother Carolyn Burton is also demanding justice.

"He was nothing but good and I demand justice," Carolyn Burton said. "I demand it. I don't want to wait years for it. He doesn't deserve what he got. He waited 13 years to get his bride a soon as he got his bride he couldn't even take her home."

Now the guests who celebrated at the Burton's just days ago, will be attending Tyrek's funeral.

No information on a suspect has been released.

The Greensboro Police Department says the investigation into this incident is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
