A woman was hiking by herself when she slipped, leaving her injured and stuck in the midst of 80 mile per hour winds, New Hampshire officials said.
Anna Meier, 33, of Massachusetts, had plans to set out on the 9-mile Falling Waters and Old Bridle Path Loop on Oct. 12, according to a Facebook post by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division and Operation Game Thief.
While descending from Mount Lincoln, Meier slipped and injured her lower leg, officials said.
She tried to hobble along the path but ultimately realized she wouldn't be able to make the 4.2 mile-trek back, officials said.
Meier's phone had "spotty service" so she wasn't able to call for help while stranded on the trail with 60 to 80 mile per hour winds, officials said.
The wind chill was in the single digits and the actual temperature outside was in the 30s, rescuers said.
That's when passing hikers found Meier on Franconia Ride and called for help, officials said.
Appalachian Mountain Club crew members were able to get to Meier and sheltered her in a sleeping bag while they waited for rescuers to arrive, officials said.
Twenty five rescuers were dispatched and eventually found Meier about seven hours after the rescue mission began, officials said.
She was sent to a hospital by car to be evaluated for her leg injury, officials said.
New Hampshire Fish and Game urges the public to remember to "prepare themselves" when hiking by packing the essentials: "map, compass, warm clothing, extra food and water, headlamp, fire starter, first aid kit, whistle, rain/wind jackets & pants, and a knife," officials said.
Franconia Ridge is about a 70-mile drive north of Concord.
