Oct. 18 -- GRAND FORKS -- Alex Heffner, the renowned national political journalist and host of PBS's "The Open Mind" and Bloomberg TV's "Breaking Bread with Alexander," has been named UND's inaugural journalist in residence.
Heffner will visit the UND campus Nov. 7-8, just after Election Day. The co-author of the bestselling anthology "A Documentary History of the United States" will hold a special student workshop on broadcasting history and effective techniques in journalism, according to a release from UND.
"We are excited to host a nationally recognized journalist as our inaugural journalist in residence," UND Vice President for Marketing and Communications Meloney Linder said in a statement. "I look forward to the hearing the insights he will share with our students and faculty during his time at UND -- just days after Americans participate in our national election. And, in turn, I am sure Alexander will learn a great deal about the momentum taking place on our campus."
A meet-and-greet social will be held from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in Room 406 of the Chester Fritz Library. Following an introduction by Linder, Heffner will give a presentation accompanied by a Q&A. The social is free and open to the public. A workshop for UND students will follow the social.
Heffner will give a lecture followed by Q&A from 10-11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, in the Henry Family Ballroom of the Memorial Union. The presentation is open to the public.
In his career, Heffner has interviewed leaders from across the political spectrum, according to the release.
"His work emphasizes the crucial role of civility in bridging divides, making him a compelling advocate for thoughtful dialogue in today's polarized climate," the release says. "Heffner's commitment to promoting constructive, solutions-oriented conversations equips him to deliver an insightful and impactful presentation on how civil discourse can strengthen the nation."
