Sanibel School, Fort Myers Beach Elementary students head to mainland during Milton repairs

Fort Myers Beach Elementary students will once again move back to San Carlos Elementary, where they went after Hurricane Ian slammed into the area in 2022, said Lee County School District Assistant Communications Director Rob Spicker.

They will begin school at San Carlos Elementary Wednesday.

The students will learn about transportation tomorrow. There will be a two-day transition, including picking up supplies and teacher learning aids from Fort Myers Beach Elementary.

Beach Elementary was devastated by Hurricane Ian in 2022, and at one point, repairing and reopening it was up in the air. Parents lobbied heavily for its return, and the school welcomed students back after more than a year of closure.

On Sanibel, students of The Sanibel School will do a two-day transition as well, heading to Heights Elementary for instruction starting Wednesday.

Just like the Fort Myers Beach families, they will get information tomorrow about transportation, Spicker said.

It is not clear when the schools will reopen.

All other Lee County School District students will head back to class starting Monday. Information about make-up days will go out to students and families at a later date.

"There may be some that find themselves in extenuating circumstances due to the impact of the storm," the district wrote on its website. "If you find yourself in one of these situations and are unable to return to school, staff should communicate directly with their supervisor and families should contact their school."
