McDonald's E. coli outbreak: 1 dead, 49 fall ill in 10 states from eating Quarter Pounders

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported an E. coli outbreak that has killed one person and sickened many others stemming from McDonald's Quarter Pounders.

One death has been reported from an older adult in Colorado. Also, one person has been hospitalized with a severe kidney disorder, health officials reported.

Infections were reported in 10 states, including Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

Of the people who fell ill that were interviewed in the outbreak investigation, all of them reported eating at McDonald's before they got sick and most of them mentioned eating Quarter Pounder hamburgers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and state health officials are assisting the CDC in this investigation.

McDonald's has stopped using slivered onions and quarter pound beef patties, which investigators suggest are the source of the outbreak, in the affected states while officials work to trace the source of the illness.

"We are very confident that you can go to McDonald's and enjoy our classics," McDonald's USA President Joe Erlinger said on NBC's "Today" Wednesday. "I want to say to our consumers that you can confidently go to McDonald's today."

The CDC urges people to contact their health care provider if they begin to experience E. coli symptoms, including diarrhea and fever higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit, vomiting and signs of dehydration.
