ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (WSFA) -- The Alexander Police Department is searching for a suspect who stole a vehicle and led police on a pursuit before evading them on foot.

According to ACPD, on Monday, around 8 a.m., officers and Tallapoosa County Sheriff's Deputies were involved in a vehicle pursuit with a blue Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado was reported stolen out of New Site.

The vehicle pursuit ended when the suspect, identified as Benjamin Thomas of Alex City, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. ALEA was notified and brought their helicopter and K-9 teams to assist with locating Thomas. Thomas was spotted on Coven Abbett Highway. When officers approached, he jumped off the bridge and fled through the water and into the woods, which officers were not able to reach by land.

Later, officers received a call of Thomas running nude near the intersection of Hwy 63 and 128. Officers, along with the K-9 unit and helicopter, were dispatched to the area but were unsuccessful in locating Thomas.

Thomas is still believed to be in the area, and police are urging residents to lock their doors and remove their keys from their vehicles.
