Tennessee 4-year-old living without kidneys in need of donation

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - The parents of a Tennessee 4-year-old who is living without kidneys are in search of a kidney donation for their son.

Matthew and Margaret Drewes' son Everett was born with two damaged kidneys as a result of a rare disease called Prune-Belly syndrome, also known as Eagle-Barrett syndrome.

Prune-Belly syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by partial or complete absence of the stomach (abdominal) muscles, and/or urinary tract malformations, according to the National Organization for Rare Disorders.

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia explains, "Prune belly syndrome is uncommon, occurring in approximately 1 in 30,000 to 40,000 live births. Boys make up the majority of the affected population, accounting for 95 percent of the cases."

Matthew donated one of his kidneys to his son Everett on his third birthday. That was in the summer of 2023. However, after a week of having the kidney, there was a blood flow issue and the organ had to be removed.

"His body took a beating after the extended hospital stay last summer, and he's finally back to 100% and has been officially cleared for a transplant again," the Drewes explain. "The first failed attempt statistically doesn't make him any less likely to have success with another transplant. In fact, they had 100% success with live donor pediatric transplants at VUMC Children's Hospital prior to our debacle last summer."

Everett is currently living without kidneys and is on 10 hours of peritoneal dialysis each night. The Drewes say while this is working well, it's not a long-term solution.
