Hancock: Olea wins at Pirate Invitational, soccer teams split

Hancock College sophomore Itandehui Olea won Friday in her cross country season debut.

Olea missed Hancock's Aug. 23 season opener at the Tour de Cuesta, but she won at the Pirate Invitational, in 20 minutes, 29.81 seconds over the 5K course at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura. Ventura College hosted the meet.

Olea was Hancock's top cross country runner last year. She earned All-State honors in cross country, and All-American honors in the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters in track and field.

The Hancock women finished second out of three scoring teams Friday. De Anza won the meet with 38 points, Hancock was second with 41 and Bakersfield was third with 44.

Hancock's Eva Luu (fifth place) and Makayla Gonzalez (seventh) earned top-10 individual finishes.

After winning at the Tour de Cuesta in his collegiate debut, Hancock freshman John Gutierrez finished second in the men's four-mile race at the Pirate Invitational. Gutierrez came in at 21:37.93. Jacob Perez of Bakersfield won the race in 21:29.68.

Hancock's Erick Marceleno cracked the individual top 10. Maceleno finished seventh.

The Bulldogs finished fifth out of six scoring teams with 68 points. Bakersfield won with 36.

The Hancock teams will compete at the Crush Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno Friday at 8 a.m.

Hancock 1, Clovis 1

After being stung by an own goal against them in the 43rd minute, the Bulldogs salvaged a tie on an unassisted Caleb Toledo goal in the 78th minute of this non-league game at Clovis Friday.

Both teams are 1-0-1.

Hancock goal keeper Max Brewster made five saves. Hancock will host Monterey Peninsula in the second half of a soccer doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m. The game will mark the Hancock men's home debut.

Women's soccer

Bakersfield 5, Hancock 0

The Renegades (2-1-0) blanked the Bulldogs (1-1-0) in a non-league game at Bakersfield.

Bakersfield took 14 shots to four for the defending Western State Conference North Division champions and had eight shots on goal to none for the visitors. Hancock goalie Allie Lemmon made three saves. Bakersfield goalie Mercedes Ramirez did not have to make any.

The Bulldogs will host West Los Angeles College in the first half of a soccer doubleheader Friday at 2 p.m. The game will be the Hancock women's home opener.
