One person is dead and an Independence, Missouri, police officer was seriously injured in a wrong-way crash that started as a traffic stop early Friday.A spokesperson for the Independence Police Department said officers tried to stop a white sedan driving south on Interstate 470 at Interstate 70 just after 5 a.m. Reports suggest police believed the driver was impaired.The driver of that vehicle refused to stop, and instead sped west onto I-70. Police pursued that driver, who eventually took the exit ramp for U.S. 40 Highway. The driver then made a u-turn and drove back up the exit ramp, driving the wrong way, where they crashed head-on into an Independence Police car that was assisting in the police chase. Police said lifesaving efforts were attempted on the scene, however, the driver died as a result of injuries sustained in that crash. The police officer involved in the crash was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. This crash remains under investigation.
