Daughter of man shot at Portland Islamic school says nearly losing him 'gut-wrenching'

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - After a man was shot and injured behind an Islamic school in southwest Portland on Thursday afternoon, the victim's daughter said the shooting next to her family's place of worship has been "gut-wrenching."

"The mosque is supposed to be a safe haven, it's supposed to be a place where you feel like you belong," Amineh Zakarneh said. "That is the direct opposite of what our religion stands for."

Amineh Zakarneh said her father, Michael Zakarneh, was at the Islamic School of Portland on Southwest Capitol Highway to pick up her siblings.

"Fifteen minutes later, he had not come back home," Amineh Zakarneh said. "My little brother called me and said, 'I see my father's car but he is not there.'"

According to court documents dated Oct. 18, there was a month of tension between the suspect, 42-year-old Noureddine Dib of Beaverton, and Michael Zakarneh before Thursday's shooting, which happened just before 2:30 p.m.

Police arrived to find Michael Zakarneh with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

After police found and helped Michael Zakarneh, they learned that the suspect, 42-year-old Noureddine Dib of Beaverton, was on the phone with 911 dispatch and asked to have the call transferred to a Portland police officer, according to documents.

Dib told the officer he was inside the school and armed with a gun. The officer asked him to exit the school and leave the gun behind, which Dib did, according to court documents.

When Dib emerged from the building, officers took him into custody.

According to the documents, police found a gun, ammunition and a knife inside the school.

Michael Zakarneh later told investigators from his hospital bed he had known Dib for about a month, as they both attend the same mosque and that their children attend the same school.

Michael Zakarneh said their first encounter happened when Dib complained about his driving during a school drop-off.

It escalated from there on several more occasions when they continued to cross paths.

The day before the shooting, Michael Zakarneh said Dib gave him the middle finger. The next day, Michael Zakarneh said he approached Dib about using the vulgar gesture in front of children.

Amineh Zakarneh said, "My father approached the perpetrator in a peaceful manner."

According to witnesses, an argument erupted between the two and that's when Michael Zakarneh said he was shot by Dib.

According to investigators, Michael Zakarneh ran away to a nearby gas station, followed by Dib, who ran into the school building.

Dib faces several charges including second-degree attempted murder.

Amineh Zakarneh said her father has undergone several surgeries for his abdominal gunshot wound, and is also suffering from a broken ankle.

"He's just everything you would want in a father and for that to almost be taken away from me and my siblings and my family is just absolutely gut-wrenching," Amineh Zakarneh said.
