Dexcom Adds Generative AI Platform to Its Over-the-Counter CGM - MedCity News

This week, Dexcom became the first medical device company to integrate generative AI into a continuous glucose monitor.

The company added generative AI to its Stelo glucose monitor, which it began selling four months ago. The device is an over-the-counter glucose biosensor that empowers people -- both those with and without diabetes -- to actively track their metabolic health.

Adding generative AI to this glucose monitor will help the device better analyze users' health data patterns, said Dexcom COO Jake Leach.

The new AI platform analyzes data from a variety of sources -- including the Stelo biosensor, meal logging and other wearable technologies, he noted.

"One of the top pieces of feedback we hear from users is that they're looking for a more personalized experience. What's unique about our new [generative AI] platform that is rolling out to Stelo users is that they'll be able to better contextualize the impact of what they eat, how they sleep, lifestyle habits and more on their glucose levels," Leach explained.

He also pointed out that the AI platform enhances the existing "weekly insights" feature within the Stelo app. Users will now receive more personalized recommendations about actions they can take to improve their glucose control.

"For instance, if you experience meal spikes after certain foods or times of day, you can consider a quick walk," Leach stated. "Of course, the insights will be tailored to each individual and their personal lifestyle choices. My tips will look different than yours. In a way, Stelo will act as a friendly health 'coach' helping consumers make proactive, informed lifestyle decisions."

Stelo's new generative AI capabilities are powered by Google Cloud's AI models. Using the tech giant's existing AI models as a foundation, Dexcom was able to build its personalized platform to gather and analyze data from different sources, Leach explained.

Dexcom does not share any user data with Google, though, he noted.

"Millions of people can benefit from how our GenAI platform can make a long-term impact on their metabolic health," Leach stated. "This is just the beginning. We believe that AI will play a transformative role within diabetes management and healthcare by significantly providing a more personalized experience, sharing more actionable insights and thus improving health outcomes for users."
