The New York Jets put a great deal of value in the work that former Rookie of the Year wide receiver Garrett Wilson has put in to help this Aaron Rodgers-led offense turn the corner. Now along comes the trade for All-Pro wideout Davante Adams, which on paper figures to take this group to another level.
Our logic says New York still values Wilson as the team's best receiver as he matures in ways that that will help the receivers room only get better with the veteran Adams' coming emergence on the team.
But all of that positivity didn't stop a bizarre Saturday night tale that has NFL Insider Adam Schefter claiming the Jets are receiving calls about a trade for Wilson.
"After the New York Jets' acquisition of Davante Adams this week, a select group of NFL teams have inquired into whether the Jets would be willing to trade fellow star wide receiver Garrett Wilson, league sources told ESPN on Saturday," Schefter wrote.
We are not going to argue against the validity of Schefter's report - but we will argue against any logic behind its assumed truth.
Wilson is only 25 and is in the third year of his rookie contract. His cap hit is a paltry $5.6 million. And he is a budding superstar. We would gently suggest that while the Jets may have heard from other teams, and while maybe those teams deserve credit for turning over every rock in search of talent ...
New York's dismissal of any potential interest from other teams in Wilson is an obvious move. They didn't trade for Adams to replace Wilson.
Our prediction is that the Jets surely eventually pick up the fifth-year option on the way to giving Wilson a contract extension that makes the Ohio State product eventually one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL ... as Adams is now.

New York sits at 2-4 as they prep to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers tonight to try and save their season. They might have expendable parts now - Mike Williams being traded to the Steelers after showcasing him tonight makes sense - but Garrett Wilson isn't among them. And any team that didn't see that before surely realizes it now.
