High school volleyball: East closes MRAC slate with sweep of West, emotional senior night

Maggy Mehlhaff has watched siblings, friends and teammates that came before her honored on their senior nights.

Thursday night was hers.

And the five other seniors on the Sioux City East High School volleyball team.

"My sisters and I are all close in age," said Mehlhaff, the Black Raiders' senior setter. "So I've watched these senior nights for years and years, it's weird to be the last one of my family to go through it. But it goes by really fast."

The Class 5A 13th-ranked Black Raiders swept the Wolverines in three sets at East High on Thursday (25-12, 25-12, 25-17) to close the Missouri River Activities Conference schedule for the 2024 season.

It marked the 35th consecutive win via sweep for East over West.

East's seniors all pitched into the win and had their moments in the video montage shown on the scoreboard in the gym after the match.

As the seniors watched, Grace Erick draped her arms around coaches and teammates.

Hollie Peterson looked at her teammates with her patented smile of approval and appreciation.

Mehlhaff, Mattie Wineland, Reagan Drent and Madelyn Jackson all fought back tears as they hugged one teammate after another.

"Everyone is awesome, our families, friends, student section. We got a lot of support this season. We lost a lot of seniors from last year, but our group of seniors really bonded throughout our time here at East playing volleyball."

"It was emotional, but all of the good kind of feelings

"We have a lot of season left and big plans yet, so we're going to keep working hard and try to get to where we want to be," Mehlhaff said.
