Two weeks ago, Paul Finebaum praised Kalen DeBoer for leading Alabama to a victory over Georgia in an "unbelievable" coaching performance. Following a pair of subpar games, he's already souring on Nick Saban's successor.
After getting stunned by Vanderbilt, Alabama narrowly avoided another upset to South Carolina on Saturday. The Crimson Tide escaped with a 27-25 win despite failing to recover an onside kick in a tense closing minute at Tuscaloosa.
Reacting to an eventful Week 7 of college football on The Matt Barrie Show, Finebaum claimed DeBoer is "wearing very thin" on Alabama fans ahead of a pivotal SEC game at Tennessee.
"They don't see the coach they thought they saw two weeks ago," Finebaum said. "They see someone who comes off weak, who comes off as a player's 'slap you on the back' type of coach. That doesn't really appeal to what Alabama football is built on.
"I think Kalen DeBoer's season is definitely on the brink this weekend."
Later in the podcast, Barrie asked Finebaum to identify a coach who has a "warmish-type seat" midway through the season. Finebaum answered, "Probably DeBoer" before clarifying that he wasn't saying Alabama would fire him.
"And I don't mean costing himself a job," Finebaum explained. "I'm just saying if you're looking at Kalen DeBoer as a stock price: Before the season, it's sky-high. It shoots. Literally, they had to stop trading on Kalen DeBoer -- to go Wall Street on you -- at midnight two weeks ago. And now, it's like on the penny stocks market. He literally is turning Alabama fans off."
Finebaum added that the "bottom just got broken" on DeBoer's first season with the Crimson Tide.
Just as quickly as DeBoer's lost Finebaum's trust, he could probably earn some back by leading the Crimson Tide to a road win over the Volunteers next weekend.
