MARTIN - Westview freshman quarterback Graham Simpson set a new TSSAA football state record for passing yards, and Westview secured the Region 7-3A title with a 59-54 win over Covington Friday at UT Martin's Hardy Graham Stadium.
Simpson threw for 620 yards, on 26-of-41, and a school record eight touchdowns. He broke his own school record for TDs. He had seven in a 64-0 win over Dresden in Week 1.
Simpson, the brother of Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, broke the state's passing record that was previously held by Shelbyville's Grayson Tramel who threw for 606 yards in a game against Summit, Oct. 6, 2017.
Simpson threw five of his TD passes in the first half and had racked up 405 yards in the first two quarters of Friday's win.
Westview (10-0, 7-0) captured its third region championship in four years and will host Wooddale (3-7) at 7 p.m. next Friday in the first round of the playoffs. Covington (9-1, 6-1) will host Memphis East (4-6) next week.
