City of Topeka asks for new trial in TPD gender discrimination lawsuit

TOPEKA (KSNT) - The City of Topeka is asking for a new trial after it lost a gender discrimination lawsuit filed by two women who accused the Topeka Police Department (TPD) of maintaining a "good ol' boys system."

Court documents filed on Thursday, Oct. 17 show the City of Topeka is asking for a new trial against Colleen Stuart and Jana Kizzar (Harden). The City is disputing some of the evidence presented at the previous trial in this newly filed document.

The court awarded Kizzar and Stuart nearly $500,000 after a verdict was reached in their gender discrimination lawsuit in September.

Kizzar and Stuart filed their initial lawsuit in January 2023 with allegations they were passed over for promotions and treated differently than their male colleagues in the workplace. They initially asked for damages amounting to $1.5 million involving future lost wages, benefits and emotional distress.
