TOWNSHEND -- The Leland & Gray girls soccer team's season came to an end on Wednesday with a 1-0 loss to No. 13 seeded Sharon Academy in the Division 4 playdown match.
The No. 4 Rebels (8-4-2) controlled possession for the greater portion of the game, but had a difficult time finding the back of the net due to the strong defensive line of the Phoenix (1-11-2).
The deciding goal came with 9:57 left to play when Sharon's MaCallister Gray found Evan Hare in front of the goal who chipped a shot over the keeper for what wound up being the game winner.
"Congratulations to Sharon. They put the ball in the net and we didn't," said Leland & Gray head coach Joe Towle. "We certainly controlled the game as I said to the girls here, unfortunately soccer is the only sport that you can dominate and still lose. I think we certainly controlled the game, but they put it in, congratulations to them and I wish them the best of luck."

The Leland & Gray crowd began to chant "Let's go Rebels" to urge their team on.
The Rebels had a direct kick with 7:40 left to play in the match, but the shot went high and wide.

Abigail Emerson had a good opportunity with 3:25 left to play on a direct kick taken just outside the 18, but the shot went just over the crossbar. Emerson had another chance from just outside the 18 about two minutes later, but Sharon keeper Abby Chase was able to make the save on the shot headed to the upper corner.
Prior the Sharon's goal, Leland & Gray had some good opportunities in the second half.
The Rebels had applied consistent pressure in the first 15 minutes and with 25:38 left to play Avery Hjner had a good chance, running onto a nice ball played ahead of her. Hiner got a shot off, but it went over the crossbar. A little over 13 minutes later, Emerson put a nice shot on goal that just went wide to the left.
"I think we played a lot faster in the second half and it showed. We, again, didn't have quite the chances. We did switch the formation late to try to put some more pressure on them, but that was after they got their goal," said Towle. "If we continued to play the way that I think we were capable of then I think we didn't need to change anything necessarily. Then of course when they got their goal everything changed and we couldn't get one."
The Rebels had some good opportunities in the first half also. A shot by Sam Morse just over 13 minutes in went just wide of the goal. A couple minutes later Braelyn Howe made a nice pass to Hiner inside the 18. Hiner took the shot, but it banged off the crossbar. About two minutes later a shot by Emerson went high over the goal.
The Rebels had another good chance with 7:51 left to play before the half on a close range shot by Grace Wright taken near the goal area, but the shot was a little too high.
In his post-game comments, Towle said with the young group of players the team had this year and a strong middle school program he is excited for the coming season. He also took some time to talk about the seniors that had dedicated themselves to the program for the last four seasons.
"This is the first season of their high school career where they weren't in the state final. Abigail Emerson and Sam Morse played great in the midfield and they really controlled. They had a lot of great passing today. Avery Hiner had a really great season and was our leading goal scorer this season. Then Rihanna (Dryden) in the back who just came (along in) leaps and bounds in terms of her skill to be able to settle the ball and make a good pass and just the smarts of how she played and then of course Sierra (Berrie) who was injured most of the year to come back, so they had great careers and I'm sorry it had to end for them this way," said Towle. "It's not the way we of course wanted it, but the four seed is I think incredible for us. I think to be 8-4-2 in the season I think that was our only loss to a Division 4 school all year ... so it's too bad it had to end for them this way, but that's how it works."
